Each season, Roger Schumann
leads a few kayaking trips in the Galapagos Islands for
Explorers' Corner, a
well-respected adventure travel company out of Berkeley, California. Experience
the Galapagos without the large tour boat. This intimate, catamaran-based
paddling adventure allows us access to places most other visitors never
see. Explorers' Corner is one of the few companies in the Galapagos with permits to
explore by kayak, and the only company with trips lead by author, naturalist,
and world-class kayak instructor Roger Schumann! By day our small group of only 8 max will explore hidden coves, beaches
and isles by kayak, dive mask and foot. By night we'll sleep aboard
the Galapagos Vision (as seen in the Aug. 2006 Sea Kayaker
magazine) as we sail to the next morning's new island adventure. Imagine
kayaking into a solitary bay and discovering a beach inhabited solely
by sea lions, sea turtles or marine iguanas.

Galapagos Travel Tips, Restrictions and Info
Because 97% of the Galapagos Islands are national park, travel around the
archipelago is greatly restricted in order to protect this global
treasure. Getting beyond the few main towns requires a tour boat and to go
ashore at any of the visitor sites requires a certified Park Guide for
every 16 visitors. Most tour boats have 16 to 50 passengers (up to 100 on
the big boats!). Few tour boats have kayaks, and those that do, generally
only have a few, not enough for each passenger, so you don't get to paddle
every day. If you want to paddle, choose your tour carefully.
The sailing catamaran Galapagos Vision is among a handful of
smaller boats permitted for only 8 passengers, AND it has kayaks
available for each person (a mix of half singles and half doubles).
Kayaking is part of each day's activities, along with snorkeling and
hiking.

Improve Your Paddling
Skills |
|
| Skills development is a trademark of Roger's tours. He is
among a small cadre of American Canoe Association certified Instructor
Trainer Educators nationwide (the ACA's highest level) in Advanced
Open Water. For over 15 years, he has helped thousands
of students polish their paddling skills at every level from first-time beginners
to instructor certification. Throughout each trip he offers informal
instruction on a variety of topics. Fine tune your forward stroke
for speed and efficiency; improve boat-handling skills with Dufeks,
draws and other “fancy strokes"; work on braces or rough water skills; practice kayak navigation and trip planning.

in Sea Kayaker magazine, and for co-authoring Guide
to Sea Kayaking Central and Northern California and Sea
Kayak Rescue. An adjunct instructor in Marine Natural History

(backcountry first aid) and has extensive experience leading trips internationally
for more than 15 years. |
