certification, we can also offer more basic levels of training and
certification at Levels 1-3, as well as the
ACA's new Trip Leader Assessment, which is a
general safety training geared toward camp counselors, scouts and
clubs. 
ADVANCED TRAINING & CERTIFICATION
Instructor Updates and Upgrades
Level 4 instructors looking to fulfill their re-certification
requirements can either participate in a
Level 4 IDW or ICE, or upgrade
by taking a Level 5 Advanced Open Water course.
Eskape also offers instructor endorsements
in Kayak Rolling as well as certification
in the ACA's new Surf Kayaking discipline
Levels 2-3.

INSTRUCTOR CERTIFICATION WORKSHOP
Level 3: Coastal Kayaking
This intensive three-day workshop offers an excellent forum to
work on paddling and teaching skills in the company of other
experienced paddlers. The Instructor Certification Workshop (a
combined Instructor Development Workshop and Certification Exam) offers
the opportunity for instructors to receive certification at up to
Level 3, depending on their experience and skills.
Skills covered include:
Day 1: video analysis of strokes and braces, modern teaching
theory and practice, open-water rescue/recovery techniques and teaching
tips, trip planning, group leadership skills
Day 2: Practice teaching strokes and managing groups on
the water; open-water touring, rescue and navigation skills;

Day 3: towing, group management scenarios; (surf zone
practice added for California classes)

Workshops for groups from kayak shops/schools. (The ACA requires
a minimum of 5 students, but we are sometimes able to schedule
dates around a group of 3 or 4 from one shop, and then find 1
or 2 others to fill the workshop.)

Pre-requisites: open water paddling and recovery skills,

Level 4: Open Water Instructor
Development Workshop
DAY-TRIP LEADING ASSESSMENT
Coastal Kayaking Day-Trip Leading Assessment is intended to
provide the minimum skills and training necessary for an adult
leader possessing basic paddling skills to lead a trip for
participants with beginner level paddling skills, in protected
bodies of water. The emphasis of this course is trip leading,
safety education and rescue, not paddling instruction. The content
is relevant for clubs, camps, scouts and other entities providing
trips. This is an Assessment Course
with a written Examination, administered by a CK Instructor Trainer.
(Those desiring certification to teach kayak paddling should get ACA
Instructor Certifications.)

The two-day course is possible for those with
Level 2 kayaking skills or equivalent.

INSTRUCTOR DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS & CERTIFICATION
Level 2-3: Surf Kayaking
Sit On Top Surf Kayaking: Level 2 emphasizes
safety, enjoyment and fun of surf kayaking. This course is for
instructors who want to and train paddlers in the basic elements of
surf kayaking techniques and ocean safety considerations in a sit on
top kayak.

Essentials of Surf Kayaking:
Level 3 similar to the above course, this slightly
more advanced training includes surfing in both sit on top kayaks
and surf or whitewater kayaks with a skirt.

Instructor Certification Workshops add a 3rd day for a total of $250

INSTRUCTOR DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS & CERTIFICATION
Level 5: Advanced Open Water
The sea-conditions the ACA requires for this challenging
three-day course probably do as good a job as any at describing what
it is about: Winds 15-25 knots, currents at least 4 knots, surf and
seas at
least 5 feet. For instructors wanting to teach the ACA's Level 5
courses: Rough Water and Advanced Surf Zone, or who just like to
play rough.

Level 3 and 4: Kayak Rolling
Level 3 and 4 instructors can receive update credit toward
re-certification with this 4-hour pool rolling instructors' course.
