Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary

Route 28: Elkhorn Slough Reserve   MAP

* See Update to page 154

Winding some 7 miles from the sea into rolling coastal hills, Elkhorn Slough is California's second-largest marine wetland...and one of only twenty National Estuarine Reserves in the country. In addition to being one of the best places to view seals and sea otters from a kayak--sightings are essentially guaranteed--the slough is a major feeding ground for migratory birds on the West Coast. Its fertile mudflats and salt marshes support an incredible diversity of marine life. Until recently, in fact, Elkhorn Slough held the North American record for the most species of birds sighted in one place on one day, 116. In all, over 300 species reside reside in the area or migrate throughout the year....

TRIP HIGHLIGHTS: World-class birding and excellent marine mammal viewing....

NAVIGATION AIDS: Together with a local tide table, theElkhorn Slough Paddling Guide and Map is invaluable....

CAUTIONS: Tidal currents especially hazardous at the mouth...during strong ebbs. Paddle and land only in designated areas so as not to disturb sensitive habitat; stay far enough from marine mammals and birds not to change their behavior (minimum 50 feet). Watch for boat traffic and ...strong afternoon winds....

TRIP DIRECTIONS  UPDATE:
